Comments: Hi, I just found out very recently that the name of my great-grandmother was Louise Charlotte Mendes da Costa, I wanted to obtain more information about the history of my family, so I was clicking on the internet and then I found this site. My great-grandmother lived most part of her live in the Dutch Indies and she was married with my great-grandfather Andre Willemse, they had 4 children, one of them was my grandmother, Astrid Willemse, who was born in 1914. Could I be related? P.S. If this is interesting and you want more information, please let me know. Greetings, Renata Porcu

Comments: Hi Armand, I was very happy in discovering this site. My name is Camilo Mendes da Costa. I live in Belo Horizonte, in Brazil. I come from a big family. I have 9 more brothers (3 men and 6 women), all "Mendes da Costa." About my family, I know that my grandmother's father and his wife (I don't know their correct names) came from Portugal. They had a son (my grandfather), José Mendes da Costa. He got married with Maria Alexandrina Mendes da Costa (my grandmother) and they had 3 children: Jair Mendes da Costa (my father), Jacy Mendes da Costa and Zaira Mendes da Costa. My Uncle Jacy had 8 children: Jacy, Fátima, Aparecida, Marcos, Cilamara (died), Vilma, Simone and Cláudia (all Mendes da Costa). My Aunt Zaira (died) had 6 children: João Bosco, Angelo, Osvaldo, José, Elaine and Ivan (all Gamaliel Pinto - not Mendes da Costa). My Father Jair (died) had 10 children: Maria Auxiliadora Mendes da Costa, Neide Mendes da Costa, Maria Perpétua Mendes da Costa, José Mendes da Costa Neto, Camilo Mendes da Costa (me), Rosária Mendes da Costa, Marcelina Mendes da Costa, Jesus Mendes da Costa, Ercília Mendes da Costa, Eduardo Mendes da Costa. All my family were born in the city of São Jõao del Rei, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Most of them still live there. I would like to establish contact with you. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards, Camilo Mendes da Costa

Comments: Hi, just found your site when researching my surname DA COSTA. As far back as I've been able to find so far it goes back to my great-great-grandfather who was Da Costa and was the owner of 'a fundicao de oeiras' in Lisbon Portugal. My great-grandfather Jose Santos Da Costa was the youngest of his children and was a political activist who landed himself in trouble often. He moved with his wife and identical twin daughters to the south of Portugal (Olhao). My grandmother Liberdade (Ilda) Santos Da Costa married Joaquim Miguel and they had 6 children. My father (the eldest) Angelino Da Costa Miguel b.1937 (in Sydney, Australia), Joaquim Da Costa Miguel (in Olhao, Portugal), Lucilia Da Costa Miguel (in France), Floriana Da Costa Miguel (in Olhao), Florbela Da Costa Miguel (in New Bedford, MA, USA) and Americo Da Costa Miguel (in Olhao, Portugal). I don't know if we are from the same Da Costa family but I would be interested if you find a link. Great site you have.

Comments: Trying to find a connection between the BENVENISTE family and the EPSTEIN family. Two Benveniste brothers left Portugal during the Inquisition and headed east. One brother went to Hungary and changed the name to Horowitz and the other brother took his group and went to Germany changing the name to Epstein. The above info is apparently true but we are trying to connect our Epstein family to the Benvenistes.

Comments: Hi! My name is Abigail. A member of my family recently went through our family tree, and my father was reading me through a list of names that appeared on the family list. On the list was 'Mendes De Costa' - Lewis may not be on the family surname links, but I do know that our old surname was Komornik. (I dont know if it is on the same side as Mendes de Costa.) Anyhow, it is nice to see a site with some of my ancestors on it. Thanks, Abigail.

Name: Martijn Gnirrep (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
E-Mail: m.gnirrep@speed.a2000.nl
Comments: Hi, I am looking for the children/grandchildren of sculptor J. Mendes da Costa as I have to ask their permission to publish photographs of several statues he made. The publication is a special CD-ROM where Amsterdam Centre has been made virtual. One can walk any route through town by photograph. Many photographs have extra info attached, sometimes additional pictures with details of those buildings. In the case of J. Mendes da Costa, the sculptures at Damrak 28-30, building "Insurance Company Utrecht" which has 5 statues on the wall. The statues are also shown at the official site of Amsterdam Heritage, but only on a Dutch page:
http://www.bma.amsterdam.nl/adam/nl/msp/deutrecht.html
If the heir of J. Mendes da Costa has an email address I can send the images I made for approval. With regards, Martijn Gnirrep

Reply: Joseph Mendes da Costa died childless. Photographs of several statues he made are held at a museum dedicated to his sculptures (in Otterlooschezand, east of Utrecht). Anyone can visit and buy photos of his work. Individual photos of some of his work and of himself can also be obtained from the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie in The Hague (next to Centraal Railway Station). Having said that, I can't imagine that there is any reason why you cannot publish personal photos taken of any sculpture available for public viewing. ~ Webmaster

E-Mail: ddssb@pd.jaring.my
Comments: I am interested in Portuguese history of Asia, in particular that related to the descendants (creole/mesticos) from Malacca taken by the Dutch to Indonesia, including those who fled from Malacca to Indonesia. The Malacca Portuguese taken as slaves to Indonesia lived at Jugu, Jakarta, who later converted to the Dutch religion and were set free. There are also similar people in Malacca who speak a Creole Portuguese language and celebrate certain Portuguese traditions. My interest is purely of a sentimental and historical purpose. Thank you, Patrick

Comments: Hi, I have looked at your site it is very interesting. I am hoping someone might be able to help me - I am researching HYAMSON. In 1881 there were two sets of families in the UK with this name, that of Nathan Hyamson (Nosel Chaimson) fron Poland, and my Great-Great-Grandfather James Hyamson, one of his sons John b 1856 Yorkshire although no records can be proven as there is no registration of birth. This family came to Liverpool 1860's and knew of the Hyamsons in the south of England. I am trying to trace some pictures of Hyamsons for my research and if they are related. There are still very few Hyamsons in the UK and I would just love to know my background. Can anyone help? Regards, Joyce Quinn

Comments: Dear Andre, I was delighted to find your website through one of the Jewish geneaological pages. I am not a descendent of your family but an historian of science who is working on Emanuel Mendes da Costa (1717-1791) as part of a larger project on Jews in British science in the 18th and 19th centuries. Members of your family may be interested in a recent paper on Emanuel: G.S. Rousseau and D. Haycock, 'The Jew of Crane Court: Emanuel Mendes da Costa (1717-91), natural history and natural excess,' History of Science, 38 (2000), 127-70. Like Rousseau and Haycock I'm intertered in Emanuel's role in the Royal Society of London. . . . I have been reading the two and a half thousand letters of da Costa's correspondence in the British Library . . . [and] the minutes books of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community in London. When the article I'm currently writing is published, I'll give you the reference in case it's of interest to any of your family. I would also like to enquire through you whether any of your 'web circle' possess manuscripts of Emanuel Mendes da Costa's, since although there are many in publicly-accessible libraries, some items have disappeared. Also, can anyone throw any light on the later career of Emanuel's younger brother David, who was a rather unscrupulous army contractor. I don't know what happened to him after c. 1759. Any help on these issues would be much appreciated. Yours sincerely, Geoffrey Cantor.

Comments: Thanks for the invitation to view your site. It looks to be a beauty when complete. My family, BUENO DE MESQUITA includes at least a couple of ladies who were born MENDES DA COSTA before marrying. Our Dutch and English ancestors are of course well documented, but I have not been able to make solid connections back to Iberia. Perhaps your tree and associated info will help me do that. Best of luck to you, and congratulations on a lifetime of good work. It is a form of mitzvah to do this, you know. Shalom

Comments: Hello Andre. Thanks for visiting my web site - I visited your site, and saw your coat of arms, it looks very impressive. I can't wait for you to put your genealogy data on-line. The connection to the Mendes da Costa families is described in a book I bought in Amsterdam a couple of years ago. It's called "Portugusade - Memoirs of Sephardic Amsterdam" by Arnold (Nol) Bueno de Mesquita, and has been translated into English. The book contains lots of his family connections, among others his grandfather's brother Mo Bueno de Mesquita who was married to Rachel Mendes da Costa. And Nol was also related to my Belinfante cousins. I'd say that all the Dutch Portuguese families are sooner or later related to each other - there were so few of them, and all very proud of their ancestry. And similar to yours, my family was spread between Holland and England. I was born in England myself, but now I live in California. And although my ancestry is 100% Dutch, I'm about 75% Ashkenazi. Thanks for the information from Rene Wijngaarden - I've been in contact with him off-and-on about this hobby. Best wishes, Harold Zvi Rabbie

Comments: Andre, I just visited your site and it looks very promising. My compliments for this and I can't wait to see your family tree posted. For more than 30 years I am researching the Sephardic family of Delvalle (Salom del Valle) who arrived in Amsterdam around 1690 from a small place Peyrhehorade near Bayonne in Southern France. The Delvalles are my maternal ancestors. One of the descendants of the family is David Eduard Cohen Belinfante (The Hague1875 -1944 Auschwitz), married 18 August 1908 in Amsterdam to JUDITH Mendes da Costa (A'dam 1881-1944 Auschwitz). Don't know more about Judith but like to know more about her. You can see my Delvalle a.k.a Van Daelen tree at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Creek/6534. Wish you lot of success and let me know when your tree is online. René F.van Wijngaarden

Name: Carla Mendes Bruno Brady (Brazil)
E-Mail: cmbruno@zaz.com.br
Comments: My maiden name is Carla Mendes Bruno. I have always been interested in my family roots. I have names, pictures, and pieces of my family history since XVIII century in Brazil. The oldest "Mendes" in my family that I could find here in Brazil are Antônio Mendes dos Santos and Thomaz Mendes dos Santos. I wonder if they are, somehow, related to the family Mendes da Costa. We are all Catholics but it was always talked among the elders in my family that we were once Jews converted converted by force by the time of Inquisition in Portugal and sent to Brazil. I have found too, in a Brazilian book about Inquisition, that some Mendes, Mendes dos Santos, Costa were judged and sentenced in some documents of that time that are at the Torre dos Jerônimos in Portugal and sent to Brazil. If you have the tmie and some information if there is a possibility of connection, I would appreciate to hear from you. I beg your pardon for my poor English. Sincerely, Carla Mendes Bruno Brady
